We asked what you wanted to know, and the answer was simple. You want to know how to increase podcast engagement, so we created this post just for you!
Why is engagement important? An engaged audience is a loyal audience. They are the ones that are really showing up to hear what you have to say, and they are more likely to share your show with someone else. Many podcasters find themselves overly concerned with download numbers, when they should be concerned with nurturing the relationship with their existing listeners.
If your audience isn’t engaged, it doesn’t mean you don’t have true fans. More likely, it means they either don’t know that you want them to engage with you, or they don’t know how. Simply stating what you want your audience to do and where they can do it is critical for engagement. We’ll dig into this more later in this post, so keep reading!
CREATE CONTENT WITH YOUR AUDIENCE IN MIND
What does your audience want to hear? Answering this question can be tough, but if you’re creating episodes that your listeners want to hear, they are more likely to engage. A good place to start is to create more of what has performed well in the past. Put yourself in your audience’s shoes, and provide the answers to their unasked questions. Finally, simply ask them what they want to hear more of. Inviting your audience to share their opinion lets them know that you care about their listening experience, and thus encourages engagement.
UTILIZE SOCIAL MEDIA
Social media is the primary place where you will see engagement with your audience. Comments, likes, and messages are easy ways to gauge how engaged your audience is. However, it’s important to remember that engagement is a two way street. You should be commenting, liking, and messaging other accounts. The idea of “if you build it, they will come” does not apply for social media. If you’re only showing up to post on your own account, you’re missing a huge opportunity to connect and build relationships.
Seek out accounts or groups that are similar to yours, and begin building relationships with them. These might be other people within your niche, or they might be fellow podcasters. The podcasting community is incredibly supportive, so start connecting!

ADD A CALL TO ACTION
How do you want your listeners to engage with you? Do you want them to leave you a review? Do you want them to follow your Facebook page, or do you want them to comment on your latest Instagram post? Whatever it is that you want, make sure you’re letting your audience know by stating a call to action in every episode.
When saying your call to action, be personal. Let your audience know why they should engage with you. Do you want them to follow you on Instagram so you can interact with them? Does a listener sharing the episode with a friend help you get your message to more people? We understand that you might be reluctant to sound “salesy.” But chances are, your listeners are on your team. They want you to succeed, otherwise they wouldn’t be listening to your show. So be honest, and let them know the ways that following through on your call to action supports you!
SAY THANK YOU
This one may be obvious, but thank your listeners for engaging with you! By letting them know it is meaningful to you, you are encouraging them to continue to engage.
Remember, engagement is a give and take; you have to give in order to receive.
