Promoting your podcast is essential for reaching new podcast listeners. However, before you promote your podcast, there are some important steps you need to take. Remember, you can’t promote a bad product.
Start with a High Quality Podcast
If you’re going to spend a lot of time and energy promoting your podcast, ideally you will take the time to first create a high quality show. This doesn’t mean your podcast has to be perfect from the beginning; your podcast will evolve and improve over time. However, it’s important to begin at the highest level possible. Any improvements will only take you higher!
There is a lot that goes into creating a high quality podcast. Consider your audio quality, editing technique, interview style, and confidence level. To learn everything you need to create a high quality podcast, check out our courses!
Distribute to All Podcast Directories
The number one place people listen to podcasts is Apple Podcasts, but it isn’t the only place people listen to podcasts. Your podcast should be available on all the major platforms (including Spotify, Google Podcasts, and Stitcher), and it’s also worth exploring other podcast directories. At the end of the day, you want your podcast to be available wherever your listener listens to podcasts. If your show isn’t available on their preferred platform, they may never tune in.
Establish Your Brand
A consistent brand will make a huge difference in promoting your podcast.
Some things to consider when building the visual extension of your audio brand:
- What do you want your audience to feel when they come in contact with your brand?
- What colors can visually communicate those feelings?
- What is your tone of voice (both written and verbal)? Casual or professional? Serious or playful?
The important thing to remember with branding is to keep things consistent. If you have a set of colors and fonts that you use on your cover art, try to incorporate the same elements on any additional graphics or audiograms you create.
Remember that as your podcast evolves, your brand might evolve with it.
Secure Your Domain and Social Handles
Once you know your podcast name, purchase the corresponding domain name and set up your social media handles across all platforms. Even if you don’t plan to create your website yet, it’s a good idea to secure your domain at the start. That way, it’s there when you’re ready and you don’t have to worry about someone else using the domain or social handle that you wanted.
